MOVIES & TV: Part Two and More Thereafter…What’s Your Opinion?
Movies—
“Wonka” -- Not that impressed. Felt light with no catchy songs. Never accepted naïve dupes as heroes.
“Tayor Swift – The Eras Tour” -- Not just for Swifties. Well put together music catalogue. Expected some sort of backstage documentary and was pleased instead with a tremendous stage show production.
“Beekeeper” – If you accept the John Wick School of High Body Count Violence this fits a base form of escapism (all the evil ones dispatched in movies these days you will not wear masks so the humanity of death is glossed over to the kill ratio). I accepted it because it launched revenge against telephone scammers. Jason Statham does well in this genre.
How to Keep the Kids in their seats. “Migration”. Okay, fair, very formula.
How Not To…. “Wish”. A poor pastel, drab colorization. Plot weak. Someone commented, ‘this was more a commercial for Disney than a quality animation’. Let me give contrast: Adam Sandler’s animation “Leo” (streaming). Well drawn, strong vibrance. Some good moral points for kids but may go over their heads. Grown-up humor which makes it worthwhile viewing.
“The Boys in the Boat”. Strong biographical movies, overcoming adversity, do well. Good historical perspective.
“Oppenheimer.” Worth watching. Interesting time in our history. No one’s moral compass as a character are totally innocent.
‘The Holdovers’. Close to being an art-house film, starts slow but picks up. Paul Giamatti, a great actor, could pick up an award.
‘Napoleon’. As a history buff, found this lengthy film to brief glimpsed post-card scenes portraying Napoleon very clown-like (Joaquin Phoenix offers fine interpretation.). This subject matter was more deserving as an epic such as Russian Director Sergei Bondarchuk’s massive film “War and Peace” (1966-1967), in four parts, 431 minutes long. Read Napoleon bio by Andrew Roberts (2014), also 32 hours as audio book.
